Stealth House: By Specht Novak Architects
Stealth House is an 1,100sf single story residence constructed by Smock Studio in 2024. The house is a small experimental project designed by Scott Specht to be his personal residence. The building occupies the back half of a standard Austin lot, oriented toward a gravel alley—a property type common in the area.A striking feature of the design is the absence of windows on all four exterior-facing walls. Instead, the plan is organized around two large interior courtyards framed with full-height glass, bringing light and views inward while maintaining complete privacy. To keep costs manageable, the building was constructed using straightforward methods and simple materials. Through close collaboration between Specht Novak and Smock Studio, these ordinary materials were elevated through thoughtful detailing and careful craftsmanship.
Within a year of completion, Stealth House had been featured in multiple publications including Dwell and Architect Magazine, and it earned both local and national AIA awards for design excellence. In addition, the house will appear on the 2025 AIA Austin Homes tour in October. The project stands as a testament to the high-quality design of Specht Novak Architects and to the standard of building excellence that Smock Studio strives to achieve.
